The Royal Acres Story
Royal Acres, owned by Dave Wilson, is nestled in the
beautiful mid-Delaware farming region, close to the state capitol of
Dover and only an hour's drive from Wilmington, Delaware. Located on
Route 113 in the hamlet of Lincoln, approximately five miles south of
Milford, Delaware, Royal Acres is home to the region's finest Haflingers.
A charter member of the Mid-Atlantic Haflinger Association, Dave
purchased his first Haflinger in 1989 from an Amish farmer. This first
gelding, "King", was quickly followed by the purchase of a matching
mare, "Queen", and the good manners and personality of these Haflingers
won the Wilsons over. Queen was in foal, and the subsequent youngster
was named "Prince", so hence the name Royal Acres Haflingers.
Haflingers are excellent family horses, so it was no surprise that Lee
-his son, who was nine years old at the time, fell in love with the
horses.
He coined the phrase, "Haflinger - The horse that captures the hearts of
people!" Sadly, Lee passed away on December 17, 1997 due to injuries
sustained in an automobile accident.
The Royal Acres herd now numbers over 60 carefully selected breeding
stock, each handpicked by Dave and Lee to carry on their ideal Haflinger
objectives.
Proprietor of Wilson's Auction located just down the road, Dave is also
a carriage collector with a superb private museum housing a lifetime's
worth of priceless antique carriages and horse conveyances
Each year, Royal Acres, hosts a "Carriage Weekend" with a large carriage
auction. Many other festivities are centered around Carriage Weekend.
Haflingers, of course, are the central feature of these events and offer
you great opportunity to visit and enjoy their company up close. Many
Haflingers can be seen in harness on such occasions, and some are even
consigned to be sold at the auction.
